Anti-Virus Software

Most new computers come with an antivirus program already installed. You should run your antivirus software all the time and update it regulary. If you do not have any antivirus software installed AVG is available for  free. Download Here [nofollow]

Gem, yes AVG is free, but is not reliable and gives people a false sense of security, because it never notices a lot of things...

I have had to de-viralize many PCs because the owners used avg and never knew they were infected with anything... Some of the infections were from known viruses and trojans as much as 2 years old. People need to shell out the $20 necessary to get a good antivirus.

As they say..you get what you pay for...

Daily scan is probably enabled. Look in the settings and remove the check mark from "Enable daily scan". In my opinion a full daily scan is not necessary since AVG is constantly checking in the background. Just run a full scan if you suspect there is a virus infection.

For what it\'s worth, I agree with Gem. I recently switched to avast! home edition (recommended by Henry above) from AVG because AVG was requiring computer restarts too frquently.. (otherwise was satisfied with it). BUT no matter which one I run the settings are the same. Nothing automatic, manual updates twice daily, C: drive scan whenever update received, full scan only rarely & when computer not too busy with anything else.
Like Gem said, they are constantly checking (heuristics) in the background so automatic daily full scans would be overkill and slow computer down..

when we log on to widows avg start scan automatically. and slow down the system. it scan the whole hard disk. consider my hard disk space is 320 GB, and, used space is more than 250 GB so approximate time of scanning is about one hour.

Hi rosscberg,

You can turn off the full daily scan in AVG options. It\'s not necessary to scan your entire drive every day.

Michael above -and "Nod".....
wait tol you try to remove it from your system, if you ever decide to, I did.. and STILL had an active component running! it took a bit of time to get rid of it all!  and even after several months - i stil find reference to it  .    it was that fact that made me not a big fan of Nod, when you uninstall something - it should be gone!! tho we all know remnants are left behind.. but to actually have one component active?!!! good grief.
I don\'t recall what it was now - this was at least 10 months back.
I uninstalled and went back to Avast, cos too many bugs were getting past Nod - as detected by other software.
